Elements

Raven Sculpture was designed by Jesse Scott and fabricated & installed by Raymond Shepard. The sculpture is made of 3/8" thick stainless steel and bronze.

Each star is 12" across. The stars were each individually hand polished. The northern lights elements were created on top of stainless steel with prismatic film. The film refracts and reflects passing light, creating motion on the wall.

The moon was created by welding bronze on a stainless background. Polish and an acid patina was applied to the moon to create visual texture. The raven and the moon are both eight feet across. Bronze motifs of the lunar phases, stars, and miniature suns were silver soldered to pedestrian handrails adjacent to the intersection.

Raven Sculpture was awarded the Mayor's Celebration of Anchorage, Merit Award in 2000.

Syndicated artist Chad Carpenter took a humorous interpretation of the Raven Sculpture for a Christmas card design.

"There is an endless net of threads throughout the universe. The horizontal threads are in space. The vertical threads are in time. At the crossing of the threads, there is an individual. And every individual is a crystal bead. The great light of the Absolute Being illuminates and penetrates every crystal bead. And every crystal bead reflects not only the light from every other crystal in the net, but also every other reflection throughout the entire universe."
